Batak playing cards: aces, a king and a queen

How to play batak

Batak is a Turkish trick-taking game played with a standard 52-card deck. Cards rank ace, king, queen, jack, 10 … 2, and play goes counter-clockwise. Everyone plays one card to each trick; the highest trump takes it, otherwise the highest card of the suit led.

  1. Bidding: in turn, everyone bids how many tricks they will take or passes. The highest bid wins.
  2. Trumps: the winning bidder names the trump suit and leads the first trick.
  3. Play: you must follow suit; if you can't, you must play a trump. Trumps can't be led until one has been played.

Partners batak

Players sitting opposite each other are a team and their tricks count together. The bidder's partner lays their cards face up and plays them open. If the other team takes fewer than 2 tricks, they go down.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play batak with voice and video?

Yes. Everyone at a batak table can turn on their microphone and camera with one tap. In partners batak you can talk strategy with your teammate.

Which kinds of batak can I play?

Bidding batak (solo), partners batak, spades (koz maça), four-player buried-cards batak, three-player buried-cards batak and three-player batak. The host picks the kind and the number of hands.

What happens if everyone passes?

The player after the dealer plays a bid one below the minimum (4 in solo bidding, 7 in partners), names trumps and leads.

Can I lead a trump before trumps are broken?

No. Until someone has played a trump you cannot lead one, unless you hold nothing else. Partners tables may turn this rule off.

How is batak scored?

A bidder who makes the bid scores bid × 10 (plus 1 per extra trick if the table counts them); one who goes down loses bid × 10. The others score 10 per trick, and anyone who takes no trick at all loses bid × 10.

When are cards buried?

In buried-cards batak the bidder first names trumps, then picks up the four face-down cards and buries four of their own. Buried cards never count as tricks.
