Online okey table: tiles on the rack, the draw pile and the indicator in the middle

How to play okey

Okey, often called Turkish rummy, is played by 4 people with 106 tiles: numbers 1 to 13 in four colours (red, black, blue, yellow), two of each, plus two fake okeys. Each hand an indicator tile is turned up; the tile one higher in the same colour is that hand's okey, a joker that stands in for any tile.

  1. The player after the dealer gets 15 tiles, everyone else 14. The first player starts by throwing a tile without drawing.
  2. Turns pass to the right: draw from the middle or take the tile the player on your left just threw, then throw one to your right.
  3. Arrange your 14 tiles into melds (the same number in different colours, or a run of one colour; 12-13-1 counts too) or into 7 pairs, then finish by laying down your 15th tile.

For the full walkthrough see our how to play okey guide.

Scoring

  • Everyone starts with the table's target score: 10, 20 or 30.
  • When someone finishes, everyone else loses 2 points.
  • Finishing with pairs doubles it, finishing by throwing the okey doubles it again (up to 8 points).
  • Showing the indicator from your hand on your first turn costs everyone else 1 point.
  • Whoever runs out of points blows up, the game ends and the most points left wins. If the pile runs out, the hand is a draw.

Okey with friends over voice chat

When you host a table you get an invite link and a 6-character room code. Send the link to your friends; those without an account just type a nickname and sit down. Everyone can turn on their microphone and camera, and their voice and video appear at their seat. See our voice and video okey guide for a step-by-step setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play okey online with voice chat?

Yes. On Boombala everyone at the table can turn on their microphone with one tap, and their camera too for video. No separate voice chat app is needed.

How many players does okey need?

Okey is played by 4. If fewer friends are around, bots take the empty seats; you can also play alone against bots.

What are the indicator and the okey tile?

At the start of each hand one tile is turned face up: the indicator. The tile one higher in the same colour is the okey for that hand and can stand in for any tile (the okey after a 13 is the 1). The two fake okeys play as the okey's own face.

How does scoring work?

Everyone starts with the table's target score (10, 20 or 30). When someone finishes, everyone else loses 2 points; finishing with pairs and finishing by throwing the okey each double that. Whoever runs out of points blows up, the game ends and the most points left wins.

Can I play okey on my phone?

Yes. Boombala runs in the browser; on phones your tiles sit on a flat rack along the bottom of the screen and you drag and drop them. No app to install.
