Cards played face down and a claim of three sevens

How to play bluff

Bluff is played by three to six players with a 52-card deck, all of it dealt. The aim is to be the first to get rid of your cards, telling the truth or not.

  1. Starting a round: the opener names a rank (A, 2 … K) and plays one to four cards face down: "two sevens".
  2. Bluff time: after every play everyone at the table has a few seconds; the first to call "Bluff!" turns it over.
  3. The next player, once the time is up, plays one to four more cards claiming the same rank, or passes.
  4. A call turns the last play over. If every card is the rank claimed, the caller picks up the whole pile; otherwise the player who lied does. Whoever was right starts the next round.
  5. If everyone passes, the pile is put aside and the last player to play starts a new round.

If nobody calls bluff on someone's last cards in time, or the call is wrong, the hand is over. A table plays 3, 5 or 7 hands and the lowest total wins. See the bluff guide for more.

How to catch a bluff

There are four of every rank. If you hold two sevens and someone claims three, they are lying. Keep count of the claims, be careful as the pile grows, and never miss your chance against someone playing their last cards.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play bluff with voice and video?

Yes. Everyone at a bluff table can turn on their microphone and camera with one tap. Catching a lie is a lot more fun when you can see their face.

How many players?

Three to six. The host picks the number of seats and how many hands to play; bots sit in any empty seats.

What if I call bluff and I am wrong?

If every card turned over is the rank claimed, the caller was wrong: they pick up the whole pile and the honest player starts the next round.

What if everyone passes?

When everyone after the last play passes, the pile is put aside out of the game and the last player to play starts a new round with any rank.

I played my last cards. Did I win?

Not yet. Everyone else has their time to call bluff. If nobody calls in time, or the call is wrong, the hand is over; if your lie is caught, you pick up the pile and play on.

How is it scored?

Whoever empties their hand scores 0; everyone else takes a penalty point for each card they still hold. After the chosen number of hands the lowest total wins.

Can you lie with a straight face?
